Aeronautical Engineering

BE Aeronautical Engineering is a 4 year UG course that manages the plan, design, development, and investigation of the science behind the powers and physical properties of aircrafts. This course aims at plugging the demand and supply of trained and qualified professionals of aeronautical.

One of the popular branches of engineering is the Aeronautical Engineering Course. Aeronautics is derived from Greek words ‘Aer’ and ‘Nautike’ which mean ‘air’ and ‘navigation of the air’ respectively. Aeronautical engineering is the specialized branch of engineering and study of science that deals with design, construction, maintenance of various aircrafts and their components. Candidates who have an inclination towards airplanes and their mechanisms can opt to study aeronautical engineering. Very few colleges offer aeronautical engineering in India while many offer aerospace engineering which is closely related.

On an average an Aeronautical Engineer earns a salary of Rs 5-6 lakhs per annum, however with growth in qualification and experience this amount goes on increasing. Aeronautical engineering syllabus includes topics like Aerospace Materials and Manufacturing Technology, Aircraft Structures, Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics and Mechanics, Flight Mechanics and Aerodynamics, Aircraft Design, Avionics Navigation to name a few.

Candidates pursuing aeronautical engineering courses can specialize in fields like aerodynamics, celestial mechanics, thermodynamics, propulsion among others. Candidates pursuing aeronautical engineering are expected to possess certain skills as mentioned below.

  • Speed and accuracy – since aircrafts have to be serviced in a short time
  • Manual, technical and mechanical aptitude
  • Strong sense of responsibility
  • Alertness and presence of mind
  • Must have leadership qualities but also be able to work in team
  • Normal colour vision
  • Physical fitness and good height
  • Strong analytical ability

Eligibility Criteria (UG and PG) of Aeronautical Engineering

All those candidates who wish to pursue their undergraduate, postgraduate or diploma degree in Aeronautical Engineering Course are required to fulfil below-mentioned eligibility criteria for the same. Only those candidates who fulfil these eligibility conditions will be eligible to take admission in the aforementioned course.

  • Since the course is offered in most of the engineering colleges, thus, candidates are required to qualify in JEE Mains and JEE Advanced by securing the minimum qualifying percentile.
  • Candidates must secure a minimum aggregate percentage of 70-75 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in their 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised board/university.
  • Those candidates who have a diploma in aircraft maintenance engineering have the provision of acquiring degrees in Aeronautical Engineering course by qualifying the examination conducted by Aeronautical Society of India.
  • In order to get admission in the Postgraduate and Doctoral Programmes, candidates must have completed their bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
  • There are also institutes like IITs, IISc and other Science Research institutions which accept scores received in the GATE examination. Candidates are required to qualify the aforementioned examination with the minimum qualifying percentile for admission in the same.

Apart from this candidates will also be required to fulfil eligibility criteria of individual institutes and colleges in which they wish to take admission.
